The secret flavor

Ever wonder what that secret umami flavor is in those beef stew seasoning packets? Well it turns out that it is yeast extract! I just made some vegan beef stew with vegan beef flavored (mushroom) broth, soy beef, thyme leaves, bay leaf, and veggies. Tasted just like it was made with beef, without all the fat. I used about a quarter teaspoon to bolster the cup of mushroom broth. Don't use too much. Also, I have found that a quarter to a half teaspoon of sugar helps to cut the bitterness.

Delicious on buttered bread

My son and family live in New Zealand where I found the famous Vegemite, a salty paste based on yeast and vegetable extracts. Before I knew it I was hooked on the distinct flavor . It’s low calorie and full of B vitamins.Makes me nostalgic for NZ !

Tastes Horrible

Got this for my child to use for lying and disrespectful language. It only takes a very small bit to do the job. It tastes absolutely awful, so serves its purpose.

Love this! Acquired taste though

For those in the US -- If you want to try this because you've heard of it and are curious or you are a fan of the old Men At Work song, take a moment and understand from the start that Vegemite has a very strong in-your-face yeasty, savory, salty flavor. If that's not your flavor favorites, might want to skip it. And second, it only takes just a small amount. Just a thin little bit on a cracker or toast is enough. A serving is 5 grams. There are 44 servings in a 220 gram jar. A little bit goes a long way. Promise. Vegemite is heaven on warm toast, crackers, in rice, stirred into Pho. It's just lovely! I like it mixed with a bit of butter on a sweet potato. Nice way to get in some B vitamins and the yeasty flavor is awesome for those of us who like strong flavors. So glad it is now easier to buy in the US! A few years ago it was much harder to get and much more expensive! Vegemite is vegan, a nice way to add in some B vitamins, and adds another flavor layer to foods.

Required taste

This is something I picked up in the military, it’s a required taste. I like it as they say on crusty bread with some tea give it a try.

Happy with item

I’m very happy to receive my vegemite here in the USA. As an Australian, I can’t live without it and this came very quickly, and at a reasonable price. I will order again

I think it is good?

Okay this is a tough review. I gave it a five star because i don't blame the product for who the end user is. If you are an American, don't apply this like peanut butter. You will be very disappointed. Just for the record, I didn't do that. I applied it differently to two different slices of buttered toast. One slice I put enough on the bread to turn the butter a browning color. On the other I put it on a little thicker. Still not as heavy as a jelly. The thinner one tasted fine. The other was a bit strong. I'm going to go through this whole jar and see if my tastes ever adjust. As badly as I've scorched my tastebuds on very hot spicy food, I'm surprised it came across that strong to me. I am interested in finding out why this became something you put on toast. I suspect the story will be interesting.

Fresh Product, Well Packaged

Only just trying Vegemite for the first time and I personally prefer Marmite, but that's just subjective. The Vegemite is more umami and tastes almost like artificial meat flavoring while the Marmite has more of a salty tang which is what I like. Good product though.

A Taste of Australia!

I was introduced to Vegemite when visiting friends in Australia, and have enjoyed it ever since! Not many stores in Philly carry it, so it is great that I can have Verified deliver it to my door. The taste of Vegemite is strong, so if you are first trying it, I suggest you only use a TINY amount. Start with a buttered piece of toasted white bread, and spread on an 1/8 teaspoon of Vegemite.

Not what I thought it was going to be like

Hear me out. Do you remember what it tasted like the first time you had beer? For me, I was not a fan. I still drank it but I didn’t enjoy it. Now, I like beer a lot and find myself craving it.This is like that. The first time I tried it, eeek!!! Not good. But I’ve been spreading it with butter on toast. Butter first and a very thin layer of this on top. I do find myself craving it. It’s a strong salt umami flavor. I really can’t compare it to anything else in the U.S. it is truly unique. Is it the best thing I’ve ever eaten, no. Have I been enjoying it more and find myself thinking about it when I want a light snack. Yes. Just had another couple pieces of toast tonight: it pretty good. Feeds a salty strong flavor craving that’s hard to explain. All in all, I definitely recommend the experience for the adventurers.

Yiiiiikes, the flavor?

The product arrived fast, not broken and perfect. But...yhe flavor is so strange and not very tasty IMHO. I knew from the other comments what it might be like but wanted to try it out myself bc of the infamous, "Land Down Under" hit song. Tastes like molasses that went bad and rotten bread with hint of broth cubes...

not bad

By its self its hard to get use to. But i heard a New Zealand family on unsubscribe tell them how to make it GOOD. I start with frozen bread (butter is easier to spread out and so is this), then toast it with my toaster oven. Add cheddar or I prefer jalapeno cheddar, and melt over it.

A Bold Taste Not for the Faint of Heart

Vegemite is not for everyone, but if you're a fan of bold, savory flavors, you might just find yourself craving this iconic Aussie spread. I’ll be honest—my first taste was a bit of a shock! It's salty, yeasty, and packs a punch that’ll wake up your taste buds. If you’re expecting something sweet like Nutella, think again. This is a whole different ballgame. My secret to enjoying Vegemite: spread it thin. A little goes a long way, especially when paired with butter on toast. Once you figure out your sweet spot (or should I say salty spot?), it’s actually pretty addictive. The 220-gram jar is the perfect size for anyone testing the waters (or brine). It’s a long-lasting pantry staple because you only need a tiny bit at a time. Plus, it's loaded with B vitamins, so it’s a unique way to sneak some nutrition into your day.Overall, it’s an acquired taste, but worth trying if you're feeling adventurous! Not quite five stars because, well, it’s a bit divisive. But for me, Vegemite's an enjoyable, quirky addition to my breakfast routine.

Acquired Taste

Vegemite is definitely one of those love-it-or-hate-it foods. I gave it a try, and while it's not for everyone, I can see why some people swear by it. It’s super salty and has a strong, almost umami flavor that really packs a punch. A little goes a long way—seriously, don’t slather it on like peanut butter! The trick is to spread it thin on toast with a bit of butter, which balances out the intensity. I’m still working on acquiring the taste, but if you’re adventurous with food or just curious, give it a go! You might just find yourself loving it. Or... not. But either way, it's worth the experience!

Great acquired taste

This is definitely an acquired taste, and it is quite enjoyable when used with butter or a butter-like spread. I have used a garlicky cheese spread and it worked just as well. Not only does it help the Vegemite be spread more evenly, but it also makes the overall taste more creamy and less concentrated in any one spot. It's quite salty by itself though, so you may need to watch your sodium intake if you need to limit your daily sodium intake.

Horrible 😀

Bought it to see if it is as bad tasting as people say. It did not disappoint. I’m sure it is good quality but I will leave it for Australians to enjoy.
